Recently, we had a woman in her late 20’s, with her pre-school daughter, come to Phoebe’s Home for emergency shelter. Carol (not her real name) was afraid of her own shadow. Her marriage was one of intimidation. She was a victim of physical, mental and emotional abuse and had had enough. Upon arrival, Carol wouldn’t hold her head up, out of shame. She could barely speak English. (Fast forward six weeks) Carol has now gotten a job and is in the process of purchasing her first car. Through personal attention and guidance from Phoebe’s Home counselors and her legal advocate, Carol has now moved into her own home and is in the process of taking classes for ESL through Region VI. She is getting child support for her daughter, who will be starting school |

this fall. Carol is also in the process of moving her 10-year-old son to be with her. She holds her head high and even makes eye contact when talking with others. She is now receiving non-residential counseling to continue dealing with personal and legal issues. Carol’s story is not unique, but is a testament as to how taking some initiative can get you out of an abusive relationship and steer you in the direction of a better life. The key is to do something; too many times victims of domestic violence feel they have nowhere to turn...nowhere to escape. Twin City Mission Domestic Violence Services offers that safe environment. If you, or someone you know, need help, call (979) 775-5355 or 1-888-45-AWAKE. Love isn’t supposed to hurt! |

Mission Support From Local Schools Continues |
|
When Twin City Mission lost the long term residential dorm to a fire in August of ’06, support from the Bryan Independent School District was almost overwhelming. Not to be out done, students from St. Joseph Catholic School donated handmade gift bags for our clients, and a hand-painted sign with thoughts of thanks for the Mission staff. The act of service for others is very present in the youth throughout our community. |
